Fuel through food
A healthy diet is the same for everyone, regardless of whether they have HIV.
If you’re on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or antiretroviral therapy (ART) medications, be sure to discuss any specific dietary restrictions with your health care provider.

- Start with a varied diet that includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, carbohydrates, and lean proteins such as chicken and fish.
- Limit your intake of salty, fatty, sugary, or processed foods and drinks.
- Eat the right amount of food to maintain a healthy weight.
- Certain foods are more likely to make you sick than others, especially when they contain raw ingredients like uncooked eggs, meat, or seafood. This also includes drinks, like unpasteurized milk or fruit juices. Not eating food or drinks with these ingredients can help you stay healthy and avoid illness.
