Fuel through food
Overall, a healthy diet is the same for everyone, regardless of whether they have HIV:
If you’re on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or antiretroviral therapy (ART) medications, it’s important to discuss any specific dietary restrictions with your health care provider.

- Start with a varied diet that includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, carbohydrates, and lean proteins such as chicken and fish.
- Limit your intake of salty, fatty, sugary, or processed foods and drinks.
- Eat the right amount of food to maintain a healthy weight.
- Do not eat foods that can contain food-borne illness. These include raw eggs or foods with raw eggs (uncooked cookie dough, for example); raw or under-cooked meat, poultry, or seafood; and unpasteurized milk or fruit juices.
